Carl Edward Stone (1928 – 2009)

Veteran of Vietnam, U.S. Air Force

Colonel Carl Edward Stone (U.S. Air Force, retired) 80, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, April 9, 2009 with his loved ones at his side. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Colonel Stone had been a resident of Smithfield since 2002. He was formerly of Poquoson and had also lived in Austin, Texas. His caring smile and great sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Colonel Stone was an Air Force veteran with almost 28 years of military service. During his military career he received several honors of distinction, to include the Bronze Star, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Award and the Legion of Merit. He was a command pilot with over 7,300 flying hours in nine different military aircraft. Colonel Stone held many numerous wing and command level positions to include Wing Senior Air Force Advisor and Commander of Flight Operations. He also served several tours in Vietnam and was the last group that closed operations in South Vietnam during the latter days of 1973.

In his retirement, Carl was an entrepreneur and built homes. He was an avid golfer and aficionado and was an advisor for Ping Sporting Goods. He played closely with Jack Nicholas and other famous golfers. Carl will be remembered as a caring person who volunteered with the Salvation Army and the Humane Society.
