The Locrian Consort is an instrumental ensemble which performs music of the Renaissance and Medieval periods on instrument of the time, and is one of the very few bands of musicke that does so in the United States. The consort was formed in 1972 by a group of backward-looking Old Dominion University students. Since then it has played a wide variety of music from the earliest days of musical history on up through the Baroque period. The consort brings expert performance skills and much lighthearted with to its programs played on a wide variety of handmade instruments, replicated with great historical accuracy.” – Dru Stowe.
In addition we will have food from Blazin’ Goats BBQ Co. a company owned and operated by two active duty Chief Petty Officers! You don’t want to miss out on this great feast of southern style cuisine.
Our 17th century weekend also features a number of vendors and sutlers (a sutler was a merchant in earlier times who sold provisions to an army in the field or to remote military outposts). We will also have demonstrations by the Cheroenhaka Native American Tribe and a lecture by Chief Walter “Red Hawk” Brown and Dr. Doug Owsley of the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of Natural History.
A twilight cemetery tour will be given on Saturday, September 10th at 8:15pm in conjunction with the event. The tour will be given by Smithfield Tourism’s Kathy Mountjoy. This tour has limited availability. Tickets go on sale the day of the event and must be purchased on site.
